Payton Summons: Brain dead girl denied further life support

Image
[ad_1] Image copyright Tiffany Hofstetter A judge in Texas has denied a further restraining order to keep a nine-year-old girl, said by doctors to be brain dead, on life support. Payton Summons suffered cardiac arrest late last month but her parents obtained a court order forcing a hospital to keep her alive. However, the district court judge said the burden of proof for a further order had not been met, US media report. The current order is due to expire on Monday, the family's lawyer said. Payton "suffered a devastating injury to her brain due to being without oxygen for over an hour" as a result of a tumour in her chest that had stopped her blood circulation, doctors at the Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth said in a statement, quoted by local channel KTVT. What will her parents do? Payton's parents had not yet decided whether to apply for a new ...

US student detained in Israel for alleged boycott support

[ad_1] JERUSALEM: In a first-of-its-kind case, Israel has held an American graduate student at its international airport for a whole week, accusing her of supporting a Palestinian-led boycott movement against the Jewish state. Lara Alqasem, a 22-year-old American citizen with Palestinian grandparents, landed at Ben-Gurion Airport last Tuesday with a valid student visa. But she was barred from entering the country and ordered deported, based on suspicions that she supports a campaign that calls for boycotts, divestments, and sanctions against Israel. An Israeli court has ordered that she remain in custody while she appeals. The weeklong detention is the longest anyone has been held in a boycott-related case, and it was not immediately clear on Tuesday when a decision would be made. Alqasem is a former president of the University of Florida chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine, a group that supports the boycott movement. The grassroots boycott campaign, known as BDS, has targeted...

FBI probe does not support Kavanaugh assault claims: Top Republican

[ad_1] WASHINGTON: A new FBI investigation into Brett Kavanaugh found nothing to corroborate sexual assault allegations against US President Donald Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court, a top Republican senator said Thursday. Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said it was now time for the full Senate to vote on Kavanaugh's lifetime appointment to the nation's highest court -- even as opposition leaders slammed the FBI probe as "incomplete." "This investigation found no hint of misconduct," Grassley said in a statement. "There's nothing in it that we didn't already know." The FBI, at the request of Democrats and a key Republican senator, Jeff Flake of Arizona, was given a week to look into allegations by a university professor, Christine Blasey Ford, that Kavanaugh attempted to rape her when they were teenagers decades ago. "These uncorroborated accusations have been unequivocally and ...

I told Saudi king he wouldn't last without US support: Donald Trump

[ad_1] SOUTHAVEN, Miss: President Donald Trump made an undiplomatic remark about close ally Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, saying he warned Saudi Arabia's King Salman he would not last in power "for two weeks" without the backing of the US military. "We protect Saudi Arabia. Would you say they're rich. And I love the King, King Salman. But I said 'King - we're protecting you - you might not be there for two weeks without us - you have to pay for your military,'" Trump said to cheers at a rally in Southaven, Mississippi. Trump did not say when he made those remarks to the Saudi monarch. Despite the harsh words, the Trump administration has had a close relationship with Saudi Arabia, which it views as a bulwark against Iran's ambitions in the region. Trump made Saudi Arabia his first stop on his maiden international trip as president last year. Trump called King Salman on Saturday and they discussed efforts being made to maintain supplies to ensur...

Iran's Zarif: EU support for deal better than expected

[ad_1] Iran’s Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, has told the BBC that support from Europe to preserve the 2015 nuclear deal in the face of US pressure has been better than expected. Mr Zarif was speaking to the BBC’s Lyse Doucet in New York after a week in which the EU announced it would set up a special financial mechanism to allow companies to get around the sanctions reinstated by President Donald Trump, who abandoned the nuclear deal earlier this year. The singer, who performed at West's wedding to Kim Kardashian in 2014, described his endorsement of the US president as "a loss for the culture". She wrote to West after an appearance on Saturday Night Live, which ended with an unscripted, pro-Trump rant. "I can only assume you relate to his personality on some level," wrote Del Rey. "Delusions of grandeur, extreme issues with narcissism. "None of which would be a talking point if we weren't speaking about the man leading our country. "If you think it's alright to support someone who believes it's OK to grab a wo...
